The Toll of Wrongful Convictions

Uriah Courtney was wrongfully convicted of kidnapping and rape in San Diego County, California and was sentenced to life imprisonment, serving eight years before he was exonerated and released on June 24, 2013.

Julie Marku is an Irish school teacher and the wife of Mark Marku, an Albanian man who has been fighting to prove his innocence since he was arrested in the fall of 2010 in connection with a string of armed robberies and car thefts in Crete. Mark was convicted in 2012 and sentenced to 18 years and the Irish Innocence Project has been working with Julie to overturn his conviction and the case is due to appear before the Greek Supreme Court.
